First look at new social housing building in Waterloo.

Residents who will soon call the new social housing building at Waterloo Metro Quarter joined NSW Premier Chris Minns and Minister for Housing and Homelessness Rose Jackson this week for a first look at the architect-designed, energy-efficient homes.

John Holland is proud to have played a role in the revitalisation of the Waterloo Precinct as builder of the Waterloo Metro Station and, in partnership with Mirvac and HomesNSW, in delivering this new social housing building for local families.

The new building includes 70 safe, modern new apartments close to schools, health services, jobs and transport. The building will be managed by Link Wentworth and Birribee Housing.

💧 It’s an interesting fact that despite being one of Australia’s wettest cities, Cairns faced significant water supply challenges during Cyclone Jasper in 2023.

The cyclone wreaked havoc on the city’s water infrastructure, with debris blocking intake at its only treatment plant, prompting emergency restrictions.

Right now, we’re working closely with Cairns Regional Council to deliver the Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project, which will not only service the city’s growing population but build resilience into the existing water network.

This National Water Week (20–26 October), we’re bringing water into focus by showcasing some of our projects that are helping to secure Australia’s water future.

From the Lake Macdonald Dam upgrade in Queensland to the Belmont Desalination Plant in NSW and the Upper South Creek Advanced Water Recycling Centre in Western Sydney, our teams are delivering innovative, climate-resilient solutions that protect communities and natural resources.

🚧 Lifting the bar on safety and efficiency

We’re proud to share that John Holland, along with our partners Gamuda Australia and Edwards Heavy Lifting, won the 2025 Innovation Award at the Crane Industry Council of Australia Awards last week. The award recognises our work on the M1 Pacific Motorway extension from Black Hill to Tomago.

The project team developed a prefabricated Super T Girder Access Platform (GAP) to improve how we access lift points on 699 Super T girders during loading, unloading and installation.

Traditionally, elevated work platforms (EWPs) were used, which posed safety risks and often required road or rail closures. Our solution? A telescopically adjustable access platform built into the crane rigging. It gives riggers a stable, ergonomic workspace directly above the lift points, removing the need to lean out of EWPs or carry out risky manual handling. The benefits speak for themselves:
✔️ 75% faster installation rates, helping us deliver projects sooner and more cost-effectively
✔️ Safer working conditions, with riggers reporting more confidence and a reduced risk of injury
✔️ Less disruption for the community, with fewer road and rail closures
✔️ A scalable design that can be adapted for future projects

Since opening a little over a year ago, Sydney Gateway has been a gamechanger for motorists getting into and out of Sydney Airport.

And it’s not just road users who think so.

The project has just picked up two major awards - Civil Engineering and Best Use of Steel – at the 2025 Master Builders Association of NSW Awards. It was also a finalist for the Outstanding Construction Award.

Delivered by the John Holland Seymour Whyte JV, Gateway is a showpiece of engineering excellence and innovation, featuring 19 new bridge structures including the iconic Twin Arch steel bridges over the Alexandra Canal.

We’re proud to have delivered this critical piece of infrastructure for our client Transport for NSW and the people of Sydney, and excited that it’s still collecting accolades long after the ribbon was cut.

🏥 A hospital that’s ready to go 💡

Many construction projects see a building being handed over, followed by the client dedicating months to getting systems up and running before the building is operational.

At the Sydney Children's Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre project in Randwick, it was a different approach.

We’ve recently completed the comprehensive System Integration Test, delivering a fully integrated facility, ready for use at practical completion. That means the network, devices and systems are all in place and tested – no delays, no waiting around.

This approach gives clients greater certainty about when their facilities will be operational – significantly derisking the program and minimising disruption to surrounding live hospital operations.

The strong collaboration with project client Health Infrastructure and the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network ensured success, and the feedback from stakeholders was incredibly positive.

It’s a great example of how John Holland is delivering smart, tech-enabled environments that work from day one.

As Senior Media, Communications and Design Advisor for the Metro Tunnel Project’s Tunnels and Stations package, Miranda has been instrumental in shaping how this transformative infrastructure project is seen and understood by the public.

From first-person drone footage to immersive milestone events, Miranda’s innovative storytelling bridges the gap between complex construction and compelling community engagement. Her work not only showcases the scale and significance of the Metro Tunnel but also celebrates the incredible workforce behind it.

Best of luck to our Melbourne Water Framework team in the upcoming Australian Water Association (AWA) Victorian Awards.

The Olinda to Mitcham Water Main Renewal project delivered by the John Holland-KBR Inc Joint Venture is a finalist for the Infrastructure Project Innovation Award. The award will be presented at the AWA’s Gala Dinner & Awards 2025 in Melbourne this Thursday night.

The project successfully upgraded two 4.5 km lengths of DN1350 MSCL pipelines while maintaining uninterrupted water supply throughout construction. These pipelines collectively serve approximately half a million customers in Melbourne’s southeast, making their renewal critical to Melbourne Water’s supply reliability.

Congratulations to all teams involved in the project – from initiation to current day operation. We are proud to be part of the journey in successfully delivering this project for Melbourne Water with minimal disruption – and fingers crossed for the AWA Awards!
