🚆✨ Our team leading the Rail Network Alliance for Metro Tunnel has pushed the boundaries in innovation, safety, and sustainability, throughout the delivery of this complex brown and greenfield rail project for Melbourne. This includes:

🚄 Upgrading the Pakenham and Sunbury lines and connecting them into the Metro Tunnel at the Western Portal in South Kensington and the Eastern Portal in South Yarra

⚡ Delivering Victoria’s first underground railway substation at South Yarra, which saved time and money for the project

📡 Deploying Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology to Melbourne’s rail network for the first time

🛠️ Implementing an innovative 4D modelling tool to improve safety, productivity, construction methodology, and communication

🌱 Achieving a ‘Leading’ IS rating from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council

🤝 Creating lasting social and economic value for Victorians, including exceeding employment targets for priority job seekers and First Nations Peoples and social procurement spend.

So we’re thrilled that this has been recognised, with the Rail Network Alliance - Metro Tunnel Project being named a finalist for the 2025 Australasian Rail Industry Awards in the Infrastructure Project Excellence category.

It’s been 18 months since people and their furry friends have been strolling above four-megawatt transformers. ⚡🐶



You’d never guess that 30 metres beneath the Siding Reserve park in South Yarra lie two four-megawatt transformers with 37 km of electrical cabling.



Our team leading the Rail Network Alliance for Metro Tunnel delivered a Victorian first – building the substation underground, leaving plenty of space above for picnics and dog walks in the park.



Crews switched on the substation in January 2023, which converts the local power supply into the right voltage to operate trains, signals and communication equipment for the Metro Tunnel.

In fact, it supplies 20 million amps to the Metro Tunnel - the equivalent of supplying power to around 2800 households! 🏡

🏆 Industry Recognition for Excellence at Waterfront Brisbane

We’re proud to be recognised by the Australian Institute of Building QLD at this year’s Professional Excellence Awards, taking home the win in the Other Construction category for our work on the deconstruction of Eagle Street Pier and Riverwalk, part of Dexus's visionary Waterfront Brisbane project.


The highly complicated land and marine deconstruction elements took us and our subcontractors and Fitzgerald Constructions Australia Pty Ltd 20 months to complete with more than 98% of materials successfully recycled and diverted from landfill.



These unusual deconstruction works at Eagle Street Pier required numerous custom-built, bespoke engineering and construction solutions to mitigate fall risks, environmental risks and manage transport logistics through the city.



To have completed the works with zero incidents is a credit to everyone involved for the safety-first approach adopted at every step.



With deconstruction well behind us, we are excited to be future focused on delivery Stage 1 of Dexus’s Waterfront Brisbane in its place.



Come 2028, Brisbane will have a new premium waterfront address to celebrate.

Since the installation of our Solpods at the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 project in December 2023, we've saved 79 tonnes of CO2 emissions - that's equivalent to planting 4,333 trees. 🌳



Our Solpods power our construction site offices along the 6.7kilometres of the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 alignment. 💡

Solpods are a relocatable solar energy system, which means they can be packed up and moved from one location to another - so they can keep doing the job of powering the next construction site! 🙌🏽



It's all part of John Holland's journey to Net Zero - with a renewable energy focus on transitioning our project sites, plant yards and corporate offices to be powered by 100% renewable sources.

👷🏽‍♀️ At John Holland, we're working every day to promote gender equality on our projects - and that includes celebrating the women we have on the job at our Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) near Torbanlea.

With data from Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) recognising that women comprise 17 percent of total construction workforce, John Holland's commitment to fostering greater inclusion and gender diversity by getting more women on site has achieved success at the QTMP.

We're proud that almost 17 percent of our QTMP workforce are women, with many on the tools and working in a range of construction roles, including labourer, machine operator and site coordinator - a number that's on par with the total construction workforce in Queensland.



We're showcasing these women through a photography exhibition that's helping to show local young women that gender isn't a limitation when working in construction - bringing to life the old saying 'you can't be what you can't see.'

🎉 We’re celebrating six years since the opening of Australia’s first driverless metro – Sydney Metro Northwest.



We’re proud to have been part of the consortium that delivered the design and construction for the Operation, Trains and Systems contract for this city-shaping project. The project included:



✅ Installation of 36km of new track and rail systems, including 15km of new track slab through the twin tunnels and 4km on the elevated viaduct

✅ Line-wide systems integration, testing and commissioning for operational readiness

✅ Conversion of the Sydney Trains Epping to Chatswood rail line to the new driverless metro



Since the opening, we’ve been operating and maintaining the Sydney Metro network as part of the Metro Trains Sydney (MTS) consortium.



Our end-to-end capabilities and thinking enable our teams to see the big picture, and find the right solution for today and tomorrow.
