For Sam Sculley, living and working locally is something she never thought would be possible after more than 20 years in construction.

As a proud Ballarat local, Sam’s career with John Holland has allowed her to work on some of the state’s biggest projects – from the Chisholm Road and Ravenhall prison developments to the upgrade of Melbourne’s iconic Marvel Stadium.

Now, Sam is part of the John Holland team helping to deliver a major hospital redevelopment in Ballarat – a project that will transform lives and shape the future of healthcare in her own community.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work on some amazing projects – from correctional facilities to sporting stadiums, and now a hospital redevelopment in my hometown.

“I’m really excited to be contributing to something so important to my local area – a project that will create lasting benefits for the people of Ballarat. That’s something I’m really proud of.”

Sam’s role as a Site Manager is about as diverse as they come in construction – because no two days are the same.

She oversees the project to ensure work is being completed safely, and coordinates trades, subcontractors, and other community stakeholders on-site.

Sam likens it to being ‘the eyes and ears’ to make sure the job gets done to the highest possible standard.

“When you watch a project go from inception to completion – it’s a feeling that never gets old. You stand back and say, ‘we did that’.”

Sam says John Holland fosters a dynamic work environment that embraces flexibility – which is why the team culture is so strong.

“John Holland puts flexibility first – whether that’s making sure people can clock off early to pick up their kids from school – or maybe they need to get to the gym or a painting class.

“Work-life balance matters.”

From generous leave policies to wellbeing and relationship support, John Holland has an extensive program of employee benefits available.

It’s also committed to driving a diverse and inclusive workplace – something Sam says is entrenched in the culture of project teams.

“It’s exciting to see more women applying for roles within construction, because there are so many incredible opportunities for career development.”

As Sam embarks on a community-shaping project in her hometown, she’s calling on anyone interested in a career change to consider John Holland.

“The world is really at your feet in construction. There are so many opportunities available right now, and the career development opportunities are second to none.

“I never thought I’d be a 10-minute drive from my office – and here I am.”
