Safety & wellbeing John Holland

Safety & wellbeing

Nothing is more important to us than safety and wellbeing. At John Holland, a good day’s work must be a safe day’s work.

Traditionally in construction, the main focus is health and safety. We go above and beyond to look to the needs of the whole person and their total wellbeing.

Our strong safety culture creates workplaces that are healthy and safe. It’s founded in robust processes and systems, the right practices and development, and support if things don’t go according to plan.

On a day-to-day basis, we’re guided by our Global Mandatory Requirements, which are evidence-based, and developed with the input of our people.

They set the minimum standards required for our workplaces when planning, managing, and undertaking high-risk activities. In simple terms, they help us protect people and places.

Safety & wellbeing

Wellbeing at work starts with truly caring, and understanding that no two people are the same.

Importantly, we incorporate wellbeing into our health and safety strategy and ways of working. We take positive action to to improve our people’s resilience, mental and physical health.

It’s not just the formal stuff — it’s in safety and wellbeing that our value of caring really comes to life.

We look out for each other, we speak up if we see a problem, share lessons learnt and help each other along the way.

And it works. In our recent engagement survey, 92% of our people said they believe John Holland is truly committed to the health and safety of its people.

Some of the many ways we promote wellbeing include:

  • Two wellbeing days per year, so people can do whatever they need for their health and wellbeing, whether that’s fishing, reading, camping or curling up with a furry friend.
  • Suicide prevention programs including peer support, seminars, podcasts, webinars and online support.
  • Specialised programs that support particular needs including: the Better Sleep Program; financial literacy; physical health and alcohol and other drugs; and gambling support.
  • Black Dog Mental Health training for every manager to help them understand how to support team’s mental health and wellbeing.
  • Award-winning Mental Health First Aid network — which achieved gold level recognition status in August 2021 from program accreditor MHFA Australia.
  • An Employee Assistance Program that’s available to all our employees and their immediate families.
