There’s a lot to live up to when a company’s purpose is “transforming lives,” but that’s exactly what’s happening across Australia’s eastern states thanks to John Holland’s phenomenal growth in healthcare.

From major hospitals to community health clinics, John Holland’s Building team is delivering a record number of much-needed health infrastructure projects.

Executive General Manager – Building, David Lehmann, said: “There’s $3.2 billion worth of healthcare work in hand right now, and we’re now leading the market with 45 hospital projects finished or underway.

“Healthcare is a very specific market and we’re working in complex environments. Many hospitals are operating while we’re working, and our customers need to know we’ve got the skills to deliver safely and on time.

“We’ve developed deep customer relationships by proving our capabilities time and again. Customers are looking for reliability, and we deliver that thanks to some of the best healthcare capabilities, teams, and leaders in the industry.”

In 2022, the Queensland Government announced the largest investment in new hospitals and additional beds in Queensland’s history, and John Holland is partnering with the State to deliver key projects, including:

  • The new $1.3 billion Toowoomba Hospital, delivering expanded healthcare to the Darling Downs region to cater to its growing population.
  • The $530 million Logan Hospital Stage 2 Expansion project, which will deliver 112 additional beds. John Holland is already delivering Stage 1 of the expansion.
  • The $350 million Princess Alexandra Hospital expansion, delivering an additional 249 beds.

John Holland is also behind significant private hospital redevelopments, including at St Andrew’s Ipswich Private Hospital and Mater Private Hospital Springfield.

General Manager – Building QLD/NT, Colin Matthews, said: “We’re proud of our trusted partnership with the Queensland Government to deliver the state-of-the-art facilities that Queenslanders depend on.

“And it’s not just the services we’re delivering now – it’s the legacy we’re leaving in the region. The Toowoomba Hospital project will create jobs and unlock opportunities for local training and skills development, Indigenous participation, and social procurement. The benefits will be felt for years to come.”

Further south in NSW, work is underway on the $438 million Shoalhaven Hospital to meet the emerging healthcare needs of the NSW south coast. It’s a great partnership with the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District and Health Infrastructure on behalf of the NSW Government. John Holland’s aim is to create lasting community legacies for the people of Shoalhaven – not just in healthcare, but employment too – so local procurement of suppliers and tradespeople is a key priority.

John Holland is also working to transform long-held construction practices with the move to a five-day working week on a number of these healthcare projects, including the Sydney Children’s Hospital and Minderoo Children’s Cancer Centre at Randwick.

In Victoria, John Holland is currently delivering Stage 2 of the $541 million Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment on behalf of the Victorian Health Building Authority.

Our ability to secure this work is thanks to our track record delivering complex works like the recently completed Victorian Heart Hospital – the first of its kind in Australia.

We’re incredibly proud of our work to transform the nation’s healthcare. This is transforming lives in action.
