John Holland secures contract for Stage One of Waterfront Brisbane

💧 We're up for the challenge to help secure water supply in the Hunter!

In what's set to become a key component of Hunter Water's Lower Hunter Water Security Plan, @[urn:li:organization:18856:John Holland] will deliver the $460 million Belmont Desalination Plant, as part of the $530 million scheme south of Newcastle.

With the capacity to supply 15% of the Lower Hunter's average daily needs - or up to 30 million litres of water every day - this state-of-the-art plant will be a game changer for the communities of this major NSW region.

From delivering the Gold Coast Desalination Plant in 2009, to the Sydney Desalination Plant in 2012 and several smaller desalination projects in South Australia more recently, we've got the expertise and capability to deliver another transformational outcome in water security.

We're thrilled to sign the contract with Hunter Water and look forward to starting work before the end of the year!

For 75 years we’ve been building vital infrastructure that connects communities and keeps people moving in their city.


In 1978, we completed construction of Melbourne’s iconic West Gate Bridge - a 2.5km bridge that crosses the city’s Yarra River, and sits 58 metres above the water.


To this day, the West Gate Bridge remains the only direct link between Melbourne’s CBD and the western suburbs and is one of the country’s busiest road corridors carrying up to 200,000 vehicles a day.


But fast forward 45 years and that’s about to change - we’re building another vital link for Melbourne’s west, the West Gate Tunnel Project.


More than 6kms of twin tunnels from the Maribyrnong River under Yarraville to the West Gate Freeway will provide commuters a much-needed alternative to the West Gate Bridge.


The project also includes a widened West Gate Freeway and more than 15 kilometres of new bridges and elevated road showcasing how we transform lives, whether it be above ground or below.


The West Gate Tunnels are expected to open in late 2025.

🚈 We’re onboard for Parramatta Light Rail! 🙌🏽


Talk about connecting the dots for Western Sydney - @johnhollandgroup is delighted to be chosen by @Transport for NSW to deliver the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 Enabling Works.


We’ll be delivering a new 320-metre long public and active transport bridge over the Parramatta River, between Wentworth Point and Melrose Park, together with approaches on either side of the river, totalling 1.3-kilometres.


This is the first critical stage of works for the light rail extension that will eventually connect communities in the Greater Parramatta and Olympic Peninsula.


We’re already supporting growth and economic development in Sydney’s West through our delivery of the M7-M12 Integration Project and the Upper South Creek Advanced Water Recycling Centre.

Transforming lives through new roads, water and now light rail connections is just the challenge we're up for!

For Tony Marasco, starting work on his first @johnhollandgroup job 37 years ago at the Air Liquide plant in Melbourne's Altona marked the start of a career in construction where he's never missed a day's work.

A few years later he remembers a significant moment while working with the team delivering the Great Southern Stand at the MCG, when Tony felt a tap on his shoulder.


An older man behind him asked what his name was and after introducing himself Tony then asked the visitor for his name.


“I’m John,” he said. “John Holland.”

"Wow, nice to meet you," Tony said.

It's this down-to-earth approach that Tony says has kept him employed for almost four decades across dozens of projects.

"When you get to know the people, the supervisors here, and you build that trust between you, they bring you along to the next project with them. That's what happened to me," he said.

Some of those projects include the Toyota Manufacturing Plant, Melbourne Remand Centre, Marvel Stadium and now Thomas Embling Hospital, but his favourite? Renovating Melbourne's Princess Theatre in the 1990's when John Holland had a brief stint in interior renovation.

"I love driving around with my family and saying 'I worked on that!' Construction has been a great industry for me!" Tony said.

Q: What eats rock for breakfast and spits out road material by lunch?

A: The pug mill set up on site at the M1 Extension project!

The @johnhollandgroup Gamuda Joint Venture (JHGAJV) team delivering the 10-kilometre Black Hill to Tomago southern section of the project is paving the way for efficiency and sustainability with the use of a pug mill.

Its mission: to repurpose rock onsite to form road materials totalling around 200,000 tonnes of heavily bound material (pavement layers) for the project!


The pug mill gives the project team better control of the end-product as it reduces travel time and distance between production and placement - allowing greater accuracy in determining quantities to reduce material wastage.



It will also reduce environmental impacts of construction through reuse of materials that are already on-site for temporary works.

And if that wasn't enough, the pug mill also uses sophisticated digital scales and measuring devices to provide accurate data on what it's producing - no wonder Project Engineer Tom McDermott and Senior Project Engineer Sophie Thompson are so proud of bringing their pug mill to site!

🚆Long before the Sydney Olympics in 2000, World Expo 88 was the most exciting thing to happen for a generation of Australians.

It was exciting for @johnhollandgroup too, winning the $5 million contract to design and construct a monorail system on the Expo site in Brisbane.

The elevated 2-kilometre loop track was constructed around 6 metres above ground, with complicated curves and gradient changes to suit the site layout.

🚄 There were four nine-car trains on the track, which took passengers through the Queensland Pavilion, across the Pacific Lagoon and beside the Brisbane River.

Designed to carry more than 44,000 people each day during Expo 88, the monorail was a futuristic form of passenger transport at a time when all eyes were on Brisbane - in fact during the six-month duration of Expo 88, almost 16 million people visited!

🎡 Following Expo, one of the trains and some track joined the existing Sea World Monorail System at Sea World on the Gold Coast, the other three trains were bought by a German theme park.

We're proud of our capability in building some of the most memorable public infrastructure in our 75-year history - and the Expo 88 Monorail is high on the list!

If you're among the millions of passengers who've made the more than three million trips on the Sydney Metro City Line since it opened, then you've probably seen the amazing artwork at Waterloo Station.

This is the station @johnhollandgroup delivered and we're proud of the connection to the traditional stories of the Gadigal land it's built on, and the artwork in the station that helps to bring those stories to life.

The public art launch on the weekend included a Welcome to Country from Uncle Charles Madden, a speech from Artist @nicole_monks and Architect John McAslan + Partners, traditional smoking ceremony and dance performance from Brolga Dance Academy.

Roscoe, who's featured in the almost 10-metre portrait which is situated on the concourse level, was among the performers.

We're sure you'll agree it's an eye-catching backdrop to Waterloo Station, along with the mural of Footprints on Gadigal Nura which maps significant traditional areas as you travel on the escalator.
