Steve Bellman has been building things his entire life. First as a member of the @australianarmy, and now on some of John Holland’s biggest projects.
As a member of the 6th Engineer Support Regiment, Steve spent nearly seven years serving overseas on peacekeeping missions, building infrastructure for communities in need.
When it came time to transition to civilian life, construction was the natural next step.
Through @veteransinconstruction, a social enterprise we’ve proudly partnered with since 2018 who build employment pathways for ex-military personnel, Steve found his footing on some of Australia’s largest infrastructure projects.
Today, Steve is a carpenter on the @t2dproject in South Australia, having also worked on Melbourne’s @westgatetunnelproject.
“Getting experience on projects like this is life changing,” Steve says. “It can be daunting coming onto massive Tier 1 projects. I was lucky to have people around me and supportive staff from Veterans in Construction and John Holland who encourage you to get out on site and say, ‘give it a go’.”
The skills Steve built in the Army show up every day on site. His punctuality, work ethic and understanding of the chain of command. It’s what makes veterans such a natural fit for a career in construction.
Over the last few years we’ve worked with Veterans in Construction to help more than 75 ex-military personnel transition to civilian life through employment across our rail, infrastructure and building projects.
On Anzac Day, we honour all who have served, including the many veterans who have been part of our teams and projects over the years.
