We’re so proud of Lilly Newton, Project Engineer on the Princess Alexandra Hospital Expansion (PAHE), who’s been recognised at the Master Builders Brisbane Housing & Construction Awards with the Women in Building Award!

Lilly’s been a quiet force in the industry for over a decade – leading with integrity, solving complex problems with calm confidence, and always putting people first. At PAHE, she’s played a key role in one of Queensland’s largest health infrastructure projects, including the delivery of four new floors built on top of the existing emergency department. It’s a huge challenge, and one she’s tackled with care, collaboration, and precision.

Delivered by John Holland, a trusted partner in healthcare construction, the project is a great example of what’s possible when technical excellence meets strong stakeholder relationships.

🚧 Transforming Melbourne’s Transport Future 🚗

We’re proud to announce that Momentum — the collaborative alliance between John Holland, Seymour Whyte, Jacobs and Mott MacDonald — has been awarded the Hoddle to Burke contract as part of the Eastern Freeway Upgrades under the North East Link Program.

This landmark project will upgrade nearly 6 km of freeway between Hoddle Street and Burke Road delivering:

✔️ Melbourne’s first dedicated busway
✔️ New lanes and intelligent transport systems
✔️ New bridges and shared use paths
✔️ Safer, more efficient travel for all road users

Together, we’re transforming how people move through Melbourne. This Alliance reflects smart, future-focused infrastructure, and we’re committed to delivering it sustainably, efficiently, and inclusively.

Major works are set to begin in early 2026, with completion expected in 2028.

🚆 Pakenham Level Crossing Removal Project transforms Melbourne’s outer east 🌇

Our team working on the Level Crossing Removal Project in Pakenham have delivered a rail and community redevelopment project with incredible outcomes, including:

✔️ Two new state-of-the-art stations at Pakenham and East Pakenham
✔️ Removal of three dangerous level crossings
✔️ Six MCGs worth of vibrant community space beneath elevated rail
✔️ Solar-powered stations and Australia’s first porous kerb installation
✔️ Industry-leading safety and wellbeing programs like “This is Why” and GEM – Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness.

From pioneering digital manufacturing and sustainable design to creating inclusive spaces and exceeding workforce targets, this project is a true example of how rail infrastructure can do more than move people - it can connect communities, inspire innovation, and leave a lasting legacy.

We’re thrilled this outstanding work in Pakenham has been recognised, with it being named a finalist in the Australasian Rail Industry Awards under the Project Excellence Award category!

We’re kicking goals! ⚽🏆

What a proud moment for the Sydney Football Stadium Redevelopment to be crowned State Development of the Year in NSW, as part of the Property Council of Australia’s Innovation & Excellence Awards 2025.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this state-of-the-art stadium to life; from the brilliant and dedicated minds at INSW, our incredible team at John Holland, and of course, Venues NSW, the proud owner of this iconic venue. The recognition is a testament to the passion, innovation, and hard work poured into this project.

A big thank you to the Property Council of Australia for an insightful lunch today, and for celebrating excellence in the built environment. It was wonderful to share this achievement with so many talented individuals from across the industry. And thanks also to RLB the principal sponsor of the Awards (a partnership which began in 1982 – wow).

Now, with fingers and toes firmly crossed, we’re looking ahead to the National Awards in September! Let’s see if we can bring it home again on the big stage.

🚆 Two years of train testing in the Metro Tunnel

It’s been two years since the first train rolled through the Metro Tunnel Project, kicking off dynamic testing in preparation for day one operations. Since then, our team leading the Rail Network Alliance has been putting in the hard yards to make sure everything runs like clockwork.

Here’s what we’ve achieved:
🔧 3,680 hours of rigorous testing
🚄 65,000+ kilometres travelled through the tunnels
👷‍♀️ 440+ shifts worked across testing and trial ops

From building test trains up to line speed, to integrating station systems and trialling Victoria’s first high-capacity signalling system – our team of experts has been leading the charge, gathering critical data and making sure all the equipment and systems work exactly as designed.

💡 Industry to benefit from carbon intensity insights 🌱

John Holland was excited to present alongside Dexus and subcontractors Kone and A.G.Coombs at the AIRAH/MECLA Carbon Embodiment forum in Brisbane. The forum was dedicated to Waterfront Brisbane’s achievements in the sustainability space with specific reference to the challenges and opportunities to reduce embodied carbon in the building façade and services.

Targeting a 6 Star Green Star Building v1 rating, accurately quantifying carbon embodiment in the façade was a key goal. John Holland played a central role in driving this process, working closely with ThinkStep through an intensive and customised approach to deliver a detailed Lifecycle Assessment that accurately calculated the carbon intensity of the Waterfront Brisbane curtain wall façade.

The result? A verified carbon intensity calculation that will be published as an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and be available for the industry to use as a reference.

This helps close a key knowledge gap in embodied carbon, giving the industry a practical tool to drive better sustainability outcomes. 🌏

🌱 Empowering futures: Garrett Smithers' journey through the John Holland scholarship

Through our partnership with the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (NSW AECG), we’re proud to support students like Garrett Smithers, a mechanical engineering student at the University of Wollongong and recipient of the John Holland scholarship.

💬 “Being part of the Wollongong Water Treatment Upgrade Project (D4C) early in my career has been an amazing experience. The team has been incredibly welcoming, and I’ve learned so much working on this important project.”

The scholarship is one way John Holland is working to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students as they begin their careers in engineering and construction - helping build skills, confidence, and connection.
