What’s it take to set a new benchmark for sustainable procurement in Australia?
Just ask the North West Hub Alliance (NWHA) - Sydney Water, John Holland, KBR, and Stantec.
The NWHA is currently delivering upgrades to the Riverstone and Rouse Hill water resource recovery facilities, in Sydney’s north-west. These upgrades will increase the combined treatment capacity of the facilities by 45 megalitres of wastewater each day – the equivalent of 18 Olympic-sized swimming pools!
The Alliance’s approach to sustainability starts with procurement – and it’s done such a good job of it that it’s recently been named the 2025 Sustainability Project of the Year at The Faculty’s Awards of Excellence, Australia’s pre-eminent awards for procurement professionals.
Some of the stand-out procurement practices applied on the project include:
🌱 using sustainability-weighted criteria for all supplier evaluations
🔄 using circular economy materials like Sense600 steel (made from100% scrap metal and with innovative bar design), low-carbon concrete mixes, and biofuels
📊 digital sustainability reporting for transparent supply chain performance
🌍 alignment with ten UN Sustainable Development Goals.
This is a fantastic achievement not just for our team, but our suppliers including Infrabuild, Refuelling Solutions, Heidelberg Materials, Boral, PV Industries and Fulton Hogan.
Not to mention, of course, the rapidly growing population of Sydney’s north-west, who’ll benefit directly from these state-of-the-art treatment facilities.
