Cairns’ water supply is in local hands 💪

We’ve officially surpassed one million work hours on the Cairns Water Security Stage 1 (CWSS1) project, and it’s the dedication of local workers that’s helping deliver one of the region’s most significant water infrastructure projects.

Over 1,100 people have contributed to the project so far, with more than 80% of the workforce proudly made up of Cairns locals.

Beyond creating jobs, this project is investing in the local economy. More than $100 million has been spent with local businesses, including 140 suppliers and four First Nations businesses.

With over 25 kilometres of pipeline installed and major work progressing at the water treatment plant, this critical project is rapidly taking shape. As one of the largest water infrastructure projects in Cairns’ history, CWSS1 will secure the city’s future water supply and support growing demand from population growth.

We’re proud to deliver this nationally significant project for the @cairnscouncil, funded by the Australian and Queensland governments through the National Water Grid.

Beneath Melbourne’s newest road tunnel lies a hidden engineering marvel 👀

The West Gate Tunnel is the only TBM-constructed road tunnel in the country to feature a dedicated maintenance passage beneath the road deck.

This clever design houses mechanical, electrical, and infrastructure equipment, making the tunnel more efficient to build and easier to inspect and maintain over time.

From complex tunnelling and major surface works to the intricate fit-out and commissioning of mechanical, electrical and intelligent transport systems, our deep technical expertise was instrumental in bringing this transformative project to life.

Building world-class healthcare for Sydney’s children 💪

The much-anticipated Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre project is complete!

The 12-storey hospital and research centre building brings together essential paediatric services under one roof – including a children’s emergency department, intensive care unit, short-stay unit and specialty inpatient units.

At its heart is the largest children’s cancer centre in the southern hemisphere, a place dedicated to world-class care, research, education and training that will make a difference for generations of families.

Designed with input from a wide range of stakeholders – from children to clinicians and community – the new building features family friendly spaces, play areas and cutting edge oncology treatment and research facilities.

Constructing this new hospital building required innovative solutions and seamless collaboration to manage complex logistics, all while keeping the site live and operational.

Even with expanded scope and challenges along the way, the project was delivered on time thanks to smart planning, teamwork and a focus on what really matters – creating a space where families can find support and care when they need it most.

A major milestone for the Hunter’s missing link! 🛣️

Construction is surging ahead on the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace, with our team achieving a significant milestone by driving the final pile to complete foundation works for the eight bridges being delivered between Black Hill and Tomago.

With 173 piles on the 2.6-kilometre viaduct spanning the Hunter River and surrounding floodplain alone, that’s a pretty significant achievement!

Sixteen piles were installed directly into the riverbed using heavy-lift barges during a complex operation that was delivered safely and efficiently.

The completion of the piling work clears the way for the next phase of high-intensity construction on one of the Hunter’s most important road projects, which is tracking ahead of schedule.

We’re incredibly proud to be partnering with @transportfornsw to deliver this transformational road project for the Hunter region.

Projects like this put our purpose of transforming lives into practice – creating a safer, more accessible road network for the communities who depend on it.

Our Next Rail Alliance with @transportfornsw (TfNSW) has achieved a Leading Rating from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC), setting a benchmark for innovation and sustainability in infrastructure delivery.

Delivered in partnership with @jacobsconnects and TfNSW, this achievement was due to strong performance in the design phase and reflects our commitment to sustainability and innovation across every stage of delivery.

Key initiatives from the project include:

✅ Offsetting critically endangered wetlands within the local area.
✅ Repurposing and reusing materials, including sleepers and spoil, to avoid landfill.
✅ Australian-first engineering innovations, like the Davit Arm & Guide Roller Combination, improving safety, reducing CO₂ emissions, and boosting productivity.
✅ Digital community notifications, replacing paper-based notices to reduce waste and improve engagement.
✅ Workforce wellbeing initiatives, such as the Standard Day Off (SDO), supporting mental health and work-life balance.

Melbourne is moving in a whole new way with the Metro Tunnel and West Gate Tunnel now open, but our history of shaping the city’s transport network goes back much further.

Decades ago, we were part of one of Melbourne’s most groundbreaking projects, the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop – now known as the iconic City Loop.

Using a giant boring machine called ‘The Mole,’ we completed the first phase of tunnelling for the City Loop in 1972, creating the backbone of Melbourne’s iconic underground rail network.

The City Loop changed the way Melbournians got around, just like our recent transport projects are doing today. We’re proud to have been part of shaping this incredible city!

How do you move a critical gas pipeline without disrupting supply to stakeholders ?

It’s not unusual to have to relocate pipes and other utilities when you’re digging on a construction site. But when the pipe in question happens to be one of Melbourne's main gas feeds, the stakes can’t get any higher.

As part of @levelcrossings, our North Western Program Alliance (NWPA) is building a new road underpass in Dandenong to reduce congestion, deliver a more reliable road network and prepare for future development.

Over the coming months we’re relocating a 750mm diameter gas pipeline that runs 2 metres below ground and directly across the planned underpass.

It will mean cutting and removing a section of the existing pipeline, then rejoining it on the new alignment with a 230m-long replacement section. To do that, we’ll first install 6-metre-tall stopples to act as stop valves, then remove any residual gas from the section being removed.

Once the pipeline is repositioned, our welders will go to work connecting the replacement section so the gas can flow again. After that, we’ll resume piling and begin digging out the eastern section of new underpass with the new road opening in 2026, two years ahead of schedule.

Given the pipeline plays an important role in Melbourne and Victoria’s gas supply, the relocation has been years in the planning and timed for when gas demand is at its lowest. Our capable NWPA team has been working closely with all levels of government to ensure every box is ticked.

And with the experience of delivering 17 level crossing removals across Melbourne, we’re confident our meticulous attention to collaboration and detail will see the job done safely and efficiently.

Now, that’s cooking with gas!

The road to Far North Queensland’s future 🛣️

At John Holland, we have a proud track record of transforming communities, and the Edmonton to Gordonvale (E2G) project was no exception.

Delivered in 2023 by John Holland, Seymour Whyte and AECOM, this $481-million infrastructure project included:

🛣️ a 10.5-kilometre upgrade of the Bruce Highway, south of Cairns
🛣️ duplicating the existing two-lane sections to four lanes
🛣️ new service roads
🛤️ relocating of 4.4-kilometres of Queensland Rail line
🚆 building two new active level crossings
🛤️ relocating and constructing 8.8-kilometres of cane rail.

We transformed one of Queensland’s busiest and most critical transport routes, delivering safer roads, reducing congestion, improving flood resilience and strengthening connections for communities across the region.

None of this would have been possible without the collaboration with local subcontractors and the incredible support of farmers, residents and businesses who embraced the long-term benefits for Far North Queensland.
