Safer and more reliable journeys.

WestConnex New M4 Tunnels

This $2.8 billion transformational project delivered the first underground sections of WestConnex - one of Australia’s largest road infrastructure projects.

The New M4 tunnels allow motorists to skip 22 traffic lights on Parramatta Road and save up to 20 minutes of travel time in each direction. The tunnels take up to 10,000 trucks off Parramatta Road each day and ensures a safer, more reliable journey through Sydney for motorists.

The project features over six kilometres of mainline motorway, including 5.5km twin tunnels, four major interchanges, seven new bridge structures, complex cut-and-cover structures, tunnel ancillary facilities and buildings; and improvements to the local and arterial road network.

The project created more than 14,000 direct and indirect jobs and allowed about 190 apprentices and trainees to get a start in the construction industry.
The New M4 Tunnels team were recognised by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia to have developed a world-first technology with the successful fabrication and use of dual-cab roadheaders. This innovation gave first hand-experience to new entrants to the industry to address the skills shortage associated with the infrastructure boom at the time.
