Upgrading Sydenham Station and the Bankstown Line for Sydney Metro – Australia’s biggest transport project.

Sydney Metro - Sydenham Station and Bankstown Line Upgrade

Upgrades to Sydenham Station and Junction and the Bankstown rail line for the Sydney Metro City and Southwest project will have far-reaching benefits to train customers across Sydney, improving rail capacity across the network and making stations more accessible.

The project will untangle the bottleneck at Sydenham, allowing trains to move more easily across the Sydney Trains network.

In partnership with Laing O’Rourke, we have been working on two contracts:

  • The $240m Sydenham metro upgrade involves upgrading Sydenham Station to be able to operate as part of the new Metro in 2024, including signalling works, utility relocations and train control systems installation. Platforms one and two will get platform safety screen doors and new canopies, and all platforms will be accessible by lifts and stairs.
  • The $227m contract to upgrade the more than 125-year-old Bankstown line between Sydenham and Bankstown. This contract includes upgrading 15 bridges while installing safety protection screens; improvements to retaining walls, culverts and track drainage; rail corridor fencing and segregation of the exiting freight line from the new driverless metro tracks and upgraded rail systems, signalling and overhead wiring.

The project will help support economic and social development in Sydney, and improve the ease with which people move around in their day-to-day lives.
This city-shaping project is a critical part of the transformation of the overall Sydney Metro project, and the key meeting point of the new Sydney Metro and existing Sydney Trains networks.
More than 100 people will be employed on the Sydenham Station upgrade creating jobs and opportunities on the southern fringe of Sydney’s CBD.
