Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death in Australia, responsible for one in four of all deaths. Patients with heart disease will be able to access life-saving diagnosis and treatment as well as ground-breaking research, in one centre of excellence. Within the facility, Australia’s leading cardiac specialists will also train and develop the next crop of undergraduate and postgraduate medical, nursing and science students.
The specialist facility is raising the bar for patient-centred design in Australian hospital construction. It will include three operating theatres, capacity for up to 206 beds and up to seven cardiac catheter laboratories.
Monash University will occupy most of the second level with multifunction laboratories, technology simulation rooms and collaboration spaces in addition to training rooms and medical study rooms.
Each year, the facility will have the capacity to perform 2,150 cardiac surgeries, 13,000 cardiac laboratory procedures as well as catering for more than 28,000 cardiac emergency presentations and 108,000 consultations every year.
