For the past 75 years, John Holland has had a hand in bringing to life some of Australia and New Zealand's most iconic infrastructure.


From Parliament House in Canberra to the new Sydney Football Stadium, the Alice Springs to Darwin Rail Link, the Victorian Heart Hospital, the Sydney and Gold Coast Desalination plants, Sydney's WestConnex and Sydney Northwest and City extension, and Melbourne's West Gate Tunnel to name just a few.


Along the way, we've evolved into one of Australia's largest operators and maintainers of urban transport networks.

Today, we're driven by the same commitment to customer-focused, innovative and value-for-money solutions that we were founded upon, all those years ago. We're taking our longstanding experience into the projects we deliver today and into the future.

So, to everyone who's been with us on our 75-year journey - including our people past and present, our customers and the communities who've welcomed us - thank you.

Over the last 75 years, we’ve handled complex projects including transmission line and network infrastructure projects.⚡️


On the Waddamanna – Lindisfarne Transmission Line in Tasmania, we tackled over 100 road crossings, eight major highways, four rail line crossings, and eight river crossings.


We're proud to be the first contractor in Australia to replace Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) on high voltage transmission lines while they were still live. We set the industry standard on the Palmerston to Georgetown Transmission Line. Others have since followed our groundbreaking practice.


We've successfully delivered and maintained highly technical projects in the power sector, like the Columboola, Wandoan & Western Downs 275 kV Transmission Lines and the Nebo to Strathmore 275 kV Transmission Line.


When it comes to complex projects that require expertise and experience, we’ve always been up for the challenge! 💪

Our people are the lifeblood of @johnhollandgroup and a proud part of our 75-year history.

Wayne Donelly, our GM Operational Improvement in Rail & Transport, plays a key role in our history, with two separate stints at John Holland during his 44 years in the rail industry.

First joining John Holland to lead the Victorian Gauge Conversion project in the mid-90s, Wayne actively sought rail industry talent recruiting people to build the teams to deliver this significant rail infrastructure project.

He took a different approach to build the teams - recruiting local farmers and residents, interviewing and training around 600 people.

In fact, some of the people Wayne brought into John Holland in his early days are still with us today leading the next generation of rail talent!

In 2009 he successfully led the bid to operate and maintain (O&M) Melbourne’s train network as part of our Metro Trains Melbourne JV - which we’re still proudly operating today. This kicked off John Holland’s entry into rail and transport O&M, which today has grown to include train, tram and bus networks around Australia.

In his time, Wayne has also been part of nationalising our Plant business, merging the rail specialist equipment acquired in 1999 from the Victorian Government with the wider group plant and equipment.

These are just some of the highlights from Wayne’s time at John Holland – there’s a huge amount of knowledge that he brings to project leadership teams and our business today.

🎓 It's that time of the year for Graduation ceremonies so it's only fitting that our Class of 2023 Graduates have celebrated the end to their two-year placements across our project sites and offices.

👷🏿‍♂️ 65 graduates attended a Self-Leadership program ahead of their Graduation, where program alumni shared their experiences and key leaders spoke of the career pathways available to Graduates.

👷🏻‍♀️ Market insights, future projects and @[urn:li:organization:18856:John Holland]'s work in sustainable construction, improving workplace culture and partnering with government were topics of the day, before the important ceremony marked the end to their term.

Building major projects is often more of a marathon than a sprint, and one man who takes that quite literally is John Holland Site Supervisor Andrew "Thorpey" Thorpe.



Thorpey, who's working on the Pakenham Level Crossing Removal Project in Melbourne, recently completed the Great World Race - running seven marathons, on seven continents, in seven days.

All up he ran close to 300km and spent about 62 hours on a plane, running races in Antarctica, South Africa, Australia, Turkiye and North and South America across one week.



A proud Gunnai and Gunditjmara man and dad of four, Thorpey says his motivation is "inspiring others to get into health and fitness. And on a personal level, my kids get to see what I do and realise anything is possible."



Thorpey has also been raising money for the Black Dog Institute along the way. Follow his journey at @fitness_dadda

But believe it or not, we’ve been involved in the energy sector since the 1960s, when we helped deliver the iconic Snowy Mountains Scheme.



Today, you’ll find our teams in Far North Queensland helping to deliver the world-first Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro project.



This project is converting a disused gold mine to a pumped storage hydro-electric power generation facility.



With an expected boom in renewable energy projects in the coming decade, we’re incredibly excited to leverage our skills and capabilities across the sector.
