Adelaide to Tarcoola Rail Acceleration Upgrade
John Holland’s Rail Business has upgraded 600 kilometres of live track on the Adelaide to Tarcoola line, improving a critical piece of rail infrastructure in South Australia.
Delivered for ARTC, the Adelaide to Tarcoola Rail Acceleration Upgrade project has boosted rail freight efficiency from SA’s remote mining operations to the coast by:
- Improving capacity by increasing rail size from 47-kilograms-per-metre to 60-kilograms-per-metre
- Increasing track capability from a 23-tonne maximum to 25- tonne axle loads
Community was at the forefront throughout delivery, with the local Whyalla steelworks engaged to supply 70,000 tonnes of steel. Providing employment opportunities for locals was also a priority with more than 1,600 training hours invested in upskilling suitable candidates, including those new to rail.
The team was awarded the 2018 Permanent Way Institute Safety and Environment Award for their commitment to safety.
Trackwork Achievement Award
John Holland and ARTC were jointly awarded the 2019 Permanent Way Institute Trackwork Achievement Award for the project works.
