Business Overview
John Holland features Australia’s largest specialist in-house tunnelling business offering premier tunnelling expertise throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia in the road, rail, water, wastewater and energy infrastructure markets.
John Holland’s Tunnelling business has experienced significant growth over recent years and is well positioned to consolidate current workload and achieve sustainable growth and performance going forward.
With the unprecedented demand for tunnelling expertise in the Australia and South East Asian region John Holland offers the most diverse range of tunnelling skills and capabilities in the road, rail, water and wastewater sectors. Our significant investment in specialist tunnelling plant and equipment provides the capability to work across a variety of operational areas, utilising our diverse range of skills.
Our capabilities
John Holland’s Tunnelling capabilities cover all types of tunnelling works. We are a leader in mechanised tunnelling using Roadheaders and Tunnel Boring Machines in all types of ground construction.
Tunnel Excavation
John Holland’s Tunnelling business is Australia’s most experienced soft ground tunnelling contractor and remains at the cutting edge of tunnelling technology having pioneered the first use of Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) TBM’s, Slurry TBM’s and open face shield technology in Australia.
We are the only contractor in Australia with extensive experience in compressed air tunnelling and ground freezing techniques. We have significant experience and capabilities in the areas of;
- Roadheaders
- Drill and blast
- Shaft excavation
- Tunnel and shaft lining
Hard Rock Tunnelling
We have extensive experience in the use of hard rock TBMs, roadheaders and drill blast techniques. We were Australia’s first company to introduce a double shielded TBM and the first use of back loading TBM cutters, a major advancement in tunnel safety at the time.
We are the largest user of 300 kW roadheaders in the region and utilise state of the art Roadheader guidance technology to minimise overcut and mitigate wasted shotcrete / concrete backfill costs. Our integrated use of roadheaders on multiple workfaces ensures we achieve impressive production on excavation as well as ensuring the completed tunnel is ready for fit out.
Mixed Ground Construction
We have successfully adapted modern TBM technology to complex ground conditions. In the Northern Suburbs of Melbourne we have managed TBM’s in ground conditions ranging from high strength fresh basalt, Silurian mudstone and running sands under a high water table.
We have experience in the successful completion in challenging mixed face conditions comprising high strength granite boulders surrounded by decomposed granite through alluvial deposits and reclamation areas.
Our success in tunnelling in mixed ground conditions is based on our experience, knowledge and use of soft ground and hard rock TBM technology.
Our tunnelling business continues to successfully provide world class infrastructure to the road, rail, water and wastewater sectors. With the continuing trend throughout the world to co-locate energy and communications infrastructure underground we are well placed to support the expanding energy sector.
Establishing and maintaining effective partnerships with key clients, contractors and technology suppliers has contributed largely to the success of our business. We have on-going relationships with Melbourne Water and Yarra Valley Water to provide tunnel construction services for water and waste water infrastructure in Melbourne.
John Holland in partnership with Veolia Water has become the leading provider of desalination plants in Australia.
