Business overview
John Holland has been involved with the delivery of engineering design, procurement, project management and construction of transmission line projects throughout Australia, Malaysia, the Philippines and the Middle East since the late 1950s.
In July 2006, John Holland's Power business became an independent specialist business within the John Holland Group. This structure has allowed the company to become more focused in identifying the requirements of the market place and has assisted us in tailoring our service offering to the specific needs of our valued clients.

We are able to offer our clients an extensive range of in-house services. In addition to these business specific capabilities, John Holland’s Power business is also able to utilise the wealth of experience and knowledge contained in other John Holland businesses to provide our clients with holistic construction solutions.
Engineering design and drafting
John Holland's Power business has maintained a strong core of permanent structural engineers, transmission line designers and drafting personnel proficient in a wide range of design applications for over forty years. The experience and calibre of this team includes a specialised capability in structure and foundations design.
Prototyping and testing of towers
John Holland has well developed relationships with a variety of reputable steel suppliers around the world. This network mitigates the risk to our clients of only having one steel supply option. It also allows us to offer our clients a managed prototyping and tower testing service at a number of state of the art tower testing stations.
Foundations and civil works
We have specialised teams with extensive experience in foundations and other civil components of construction in the power industry. This capability is enhanced by John Holland's Power business direct ownership of the majority of plant and equipment necessary to perform these works. Our fleet includes Soilmech boring machines and other earth moving equipment.
Steel assembly and erection
Steel assembly and erection on all Power projects is undertaken by John Holland’s own crews of riggers, linesman, dogman and plant operators. This workforce utilises John Holland owned plant and equipment including 8 x 8 trucks, cranes and 4WD vehicles to ensure that this activity is delivery entirely by our own in-house teams at extremely competitive rates.
Stringing of conductors and OPGW
John Holland boasts some of the most experienced stringing personnel in the power industry. Our geographic spread
We are a national business with a history of successful projects in all states and territories of Australia. As such we have offices located throughout regional and metropolitan Australia.
Our Contracting Methods
John Holland’s Power business has considerable experience in a variety of contracting methods. Traditional lump contracting continues to remain popular with many of our clients. However there has also been a notable increase in relationship contracting, alliancing, joint ventures and partnering as the preferred method of project delivery.
Our capacity
We have successfully delivered projects valued at as little as $2 million. We also have the capability, skills and resources to deliver works valued in excess of several hundred million dollars.
Similarly, we are not constrained by geographic boundaries. Our regional structure allows us to cater to clients in all states and territories within Australia as well as overseas. The remote nature of many power projects also means that we have become conditioned to working away from major regional centres or capital cities.
The diversity of the wider John Holland business allows us to engage in extremely complex and large scale projects. We are then able to offer integrated end-to-end capabilities providing economies of scale to all of our partners.
Our people
We recognise that our people are our most valuable asset. We are committed to offering our employees more than just industry leading remuneration packages. The business is currently rolling out the Group’s Personal Development System (PDS). This performance management system tailors an employee’s work plan around delivering a combination of company objectives as well as addressing individual needs including work/life balance.
The company offers a variety of internal and external safety training courses which help to reinforce the strong "No Harm" culture championed by our project teams and the Passport to Safety Excellence Program.
The culture of our business
The culture that John Holland has developed is built on three pillars - safety, teamwork and the pursuit of excellence.
Safety
Working at heights on tower erection, the stringing of lengthy sections of conductor under tension and the fatigue management of work crews living in remote areas are just a few of the challenges faced by John Holland’s Power business on a daily basis. Our Project Management Plans and Project Safety Plans, coupled with training initiatives specifically designed for our work activities, are tools for reiterating the message that safety on our sites comes before all other measures of performance.
Teamwork
To safely and efficiently undertake the challenging activities on our projects requires trust, respect, cooperation and planning by all of our team members.
The increased popularity of relationship style contracting with many of our clients has also extended John Holland commitment to teamwork beyond the internal environment. We have recently established project offices that incorporate space for our clients representatives in a bid to further promote the team approach to delivering our works.
Pursuit of excellence
Our people are committed to continually improving all aspects of our operations. This includes the quality of our tendering processes, the innovation of our designs, the delivery of our construction, the management of our project teams, the accounting practices of our commercial teams and the ongoing support that we offer our clients after the completion of our works.
